During my 20+ years of experience in this community I have worked with children, adolescents, adults and families with a variety of issues and in a variety of settings. No matter what the age or what the issue I have found that most people have the ability to cope with life when they have the support they need. What I love most about being a therapist is seeing how positive changes in one person have a ripple effect in their family and community. We are truly all connected. I believe my non-threatening down -to- earth support, optimism, and problem-solving skills are my greatest therapy strengths. I would love the opportunity to listen to you and help you uncover the strengths you need to live life to the fullest.
Kathy received a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from Illinois State University in 1994 and has been a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in the state of Illinois since 1996. She has been trained in numerous techniques including play therapy, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), TBRI (Trust Based Relational Intervention) and BrainPaint EEG Biofeedback.

Before I was a therapist, I was an educator. Among other courses, I taught Crisis Communication in the Police and Fire Safety Academy and volunteered with an on-campus crisis center. My job was to teach first responders how to get important information from potentially traumatized witnesses/victims, and I often wondered what I would do if I were permitted to see the crisis through. What would I do if I were the therapist who assisted this person— start to finish—in recovering from a life-altering event?
When I accepted a faculty position in the Department of Communication at Illinois State University, I decided to find out. I earned another Master's Degree in Psychology. I believe that it is my combination of a solid background in communication—which includes relationships, gender-speak, assertiveness and self-talk—along with my education in Clinical Psychology and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor certification that provides for a well-balanced approach to individual counseling.
My clients—though they often have very difficult circumstances to overcome—are most often wonderful people in difficult situations. They inspire me. When I see the healing, when I see the insight, when I see the answer with the client, I am humbled and grateful for the therapeutic relationship. And, I love the "happily ever afters."

Many humans suffer from emotional distress and psychological symptoms due to aversive life events. Often times, negative experiences can become “stuck” in our brains impacting how we perceive ourselves, others, or the world. Our beliefs about ourselves can become skewed and negative. As a trauma-trained therapist, I can help you work through these past events and shift these beliefs in order to be able to live the life YOU want to live.
By building a safe and trusting foundation, we can work together to build confidence in recognizing what is within our control to overcome negative behaviors and emotions. We will work to identify several different skills to help manage and decrease heightened emotions and symptoms.
Prior to joining Elliott Counseling Services, I have provided therapy for a wide range of ages from varying socioeconomic backgrounds. Working as an outreach counselor as well as a crisis intervention therapist, I have assisted individuals facing many different challenges such as depression, anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), eating disorders, mood disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), and various other behavioral problems. I graduated Chi Sigma Iota from the University of Illinois Springfield in 2013 receiving my Master of Arts in Human Development Counseling. I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (#180.011726) for the State of Illinois.

Pain is a part of life; we do not get to choose whether or not we have this experience. However, suffering with pain is a choice. It is my primary therapeutic focus to help people recognize and decrease their suffering by building a life they see as worth living – to increase a sense of meaning and purpose, and to increase confidence in one’s ability to cope with struggles. I provide a safe, comfortable, and supportive environment for people to gain a deeper understanding of themselves, the circumstances bringing them to counseling, and what they want out of life. I guide people to build upon their strengths and set goals to make changes that line up with how they want to live. We can experience joy and live to the fullest despite difficulties we may be facing.
Prior to working at ECS, I worked in community mental health and substance use treatment settings. These experiences provided me with the specialized skills to help people of all ages with a wide variety of mental health disorders and life changes. My areas of experience include depression, anxiety, anger issues, trauma, borderline personality disorder, addictions, stress-management, self-harm, relationship issues, low self-esteem, parenting, OCD, and life transitions/adjustments.
I received a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology (2015) and a Master of Science degree in Clinical-Counseling Psychology (2017), both from Illinois State University. I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in the state of Illinois (License No. 180.013004).
Therapeutic interventions and techniques used: CBT, DBT, Prolonged Exposure Therapy for trauma, Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD, crisis intervention, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), faith-based guidance and support, and more.

We are often taught to deal with life’s challenges by just “getting over it”. Your feelings aren’t a problem you’re supposed to ignore or fix. They’re feedback from your body about how you’re doing and what you need in life. It is ok to tell people that you are struggling or are having a hard time. Finding a safe person to share your difficult feelings with is hard. This is why it is important for me to create a safe and welcoming environment where you are free to be yourself without judgment.
Prior to working at Elliott, I worked several years in community agencies providing counseling to those of all ages. Some areas of experience include but are not limited to: anxiety, depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), other trauma related issues, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), relationship issues, mood disorders, self-harming behaviors, personality disorders, adoption, life transitions, divorce, grief/loss, self-esteem, sexual abuse, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD).
I use a person-centered approach to help assist you in coping with life’s challenges. I utilize a combination of techniques from the following modalities: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma Focused, Solutions Focused, Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
I enjoy connecting with individual clients from teens/young adults to the elderly. I am down-to-earth, compassionate and open to helping others through the counseling process. I have been working in the counseling field since 2012 and received my Masters Degree in counseling from Northern Illinois University in 2013. I continue to further my education in the areas of trauma and other mental health issues that are relevant within the work I do with clients.

Carl Rogers said, "the curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change."
I work with clients not only to identify what they liked to change in their lives but also accept themselves and extend self-compassion. Looking at family history, typical reactions, and relationships can tell us a lot about ourselves. I have worked with individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, substance abuse as well as more everyday concerns like coping with stress, managing transitions, and coping with life disappointments. I draw from mindfulness, self-compassion, cognitive behavioral, humanistic, and acceptance/commitment therapy models. I aim to be adaptive and collaborative throughout the therapeutic process to help you work towards your goals and the changes you wish to make in your life.
I earned my BA in social sciences education from Illinois State University and my MA in clinical mental health counseling from Adams State University. I have spent over 10 years working in higher education, including college counseling and mental health education. In my work with Elliott Counseling Services, I work with clients of all ages with a strong interest in working with teens and young adults. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Illinois and a National Certified Counselor.
We are all in this journey of self-discovery and change. Whether you have been to counseling before or are considering it for the first time, I hope you take this courageous first step to begin to re-write your story in a way that helps you achieve your life goals.

Some common therapeutic modalities I draw from include: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Polyvagal-informed approaches, mindfulness, strengths-based, BrainPaint EEG Biofeedback, expressive interventions, and more. Before working at ECS, I worked in community-based treatment, supporting survivors of domestic violence, individuals involved in the criminal justice system, and those confronting mental health and substance use challenges.
These experiences strengthened my passion for helping individuals heal from trauma, reduce shame, and recognize the resilience they have developed through the ways they learned to survive difficult experiences. I have experience supporting clients of all ages with trauma, anxiety, depression, substance use, emotional dysregulation, ADHD, life transitions, and more. I especially value working with clients who feel stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected from themselves, or caught in patterns they no longer understand. My goal is to provide a nonjudgmental space where people of all ages feel safe, understood, and empowered to reconnect with their strengths and values, deepen self-understanding, and create lasting change.
